Development of Hotels in Boracay has been rapid over the last 20 to 30 years.
Boracay Island was formally known as”Land of the Atis’ because the first settlers on the island were called the Atis or Negreitos people, who farmed and fished in the area for centuries.
Boracay is part of the Aklan province, which secured independence in 1956 and remained relatively undiscovered until the late 70s when either a film crew or a German tourist/writer discovered the island and spread the word. Launching the tourism craze which started the development of hotels in Boracay ever since.
It didn’t happen over night, with most of the 1980s being reserved for backpackers looking for something off the beaten track. It was around this time that the first hotels in Boracay were built. The Cafe de Paris is one of the oldest hotels which is still going, having been built in 1984.
A lot has changed since then with over 150 Boracay hotels, resorts, beach houses and other vacation developments springing up over night and unabated. You can now take your pick from the familiar marque resorts such as the Shangri-La, to the unique in Balling-Hai resort, to a wide selection of budget hotels.
It is not the sleepy island paradise it once was but it is still a beautiful and amazing place with the world famous White Beach. Boracay White Beach was voted in top 3 beaches in the world as recently as 2007 by the Independent Travelers awards. On White Beach you will find the largest selection of hotels in Boracay, but there are plenty of options spread around the island for those looking for something a little different.
